What are we going to do

Learn about the labour pains of a nation. The decisive battle of the Finnish Civil War was fought in Tampere in the spring of 1918. It was the biggest blood path in the history of the Nordic countries to that date. See the venues and here the stories. Speciality: the memorial tombstone of Olof Palme (not the Swedish prime minister but his uncle). – What on earth was he doing here during the civil war?

During the walk we also visit the Cathedral, learn about its' role as a sanctuary in the battle and see the wonderful symbolic frescoes of my favorite artist Hugo Simberg.

If You wish, for additional admission fee You will get a guided tour to the great exhibition Tampere 1918 in the Vapriikki museum. You can decide whether to take the museum visit or not during the walk. We can also make the tour with bikes, if You rent a city bike.

Duration: approx. 2 - 3 h (3 h with visit to the museum)
Walking/biking distance: approx. 5 km
Fee: 25 euros - ask for group discount (+ the possible visit to the museum)
Starting time: 10 a.m. or as requested
Starting point: Outside the main entrance of Tampere Hall (= Tampere-talo, Yliopistonkatu 55)
Finishing point: The Central Square

During this city walk I’ll tell You stories that give You the essentials of the past and present of Tampere and Finland.

If You wish we can take a break e.g. in the Tammelatori market place where you can taste the local speciality mustamakkara (black sausage) or enjoy a cup of coffee. During the break You will also get (humorous) insights into the identity and mentality of the Finns and especially the people of Tampere. I can give You a ”comprehensive language course” of Finnish and the Tampere dialect.

About Mika - the Doer

I’m a 50+ teacher of Finnish language, literature and culture. I’m interested in history and all kinds of stories. I enjoy walking and talking. I believe, that a stereotypical Finn – especially one living in Tampere – is quite an interesting creature…

Jag talar litet svenska också. Ich spreche auch ein bisschen Deutsch. Je parle un peu francais aussi.

Remember to wear good walking shoes.

The tour is prohibited from minors due to the violent nature of the stories and the shocking graphics I show to demonstrate the events.

Suosittelen kaikille Tampereen historiasta kiinnostuneille.

We took the tour with our own family so it was safe even in korona time. The route wasn´t too long and it went around Tampere in beautiful and interesting areas. Mika told a lot of detailed stories about the events and had pictures and maps to make it even more interesting. A good tour to everyone who is interested in Tampere´s history and places.
Mika Mika Kiitokset kiinnostuksesta! Thanks for your interest!
