What are we going to do

Jyväskylä shows a different face at night. In our walking tour you'll see the most interesting lighted features in the city centre. You hear stories about their background and of the city in general. How did Jyväskylä become the forerunner of urban lighting in Finland? How come a pretty rational and not a very big city starts shining and glittering in bright colours at night? This work has gained major international recognition, including the Chair of LUCI, the Lighting Urban Community International network of over 70 cities worldwide.

On top of the permanent lighted features Jyväskylä has organized a popular City of Light event every autumn since 2003 (Covid19 autumn as an exception). The international event attracted over 130.000 visitors in 2019. In 2022 the event will be organized between September 29 and October 8. With Opas-Outi you get to know the background of the art and artists presented in the event.

The walking tour can be organized from autumn till spring. During the darkest months the sun sets around 4 PM. The earliest we can start our tour is 5 PM. At the end of March the sun sets around 8 PM. In May, June and July the nights are too light to enjoy this tour.

About Opas-Outi - the Doer

I am in love with my home city. I went to school and to the university here, worked elsewhere for years but came back agout 10 years ago. As a trained and authorized local guide and a sociologist I have a wide knowledge of Finnish and local culture, history and developments.

With a guide you see and understand more!

Requirements

All you need is warm clothing, good shoes and possibly some rain gear depending on the weather. If you have a flash light you might want to take it with you but you can borrow one from Outi.
